Bangladesh is a sovereign country, also known as the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, which is located in South Asia at the highest point of the Bay of Bengal and is bordered by Myanmar and India. The name of the country may be translated as the “Land of Bengal” or the “Country of Bengal”. As it has the population of approximately 168 million people, it is considered the world’s eighth most populous country and the fifth most populous country in Asia.
Dhaka is considered the capital of the country, which contains about 12 million inhabitants. The other large cities of Bangladesh include Chittagong, the international seaport of the country, Khulna, which is famous for its shrimp, Rajshahi, also known as the silk city, Rangpur, Sylhet, Jessore, Comilla and few others.
The Bengali language is the official language of Bangladesh, which is considered the seventh most spoken native language in the world. English is also used as the second language, widely spread in the educational and legal systems. There are also few more minority languages, used among the minority ethnic groups in the regions of their dwelling.
Bengalis form about 98% of the whole population, nevertheless there are few minority ethnic groups that also dwell on the territory of the country that include Tripuri, Marma, Kuki, the Chakma and few others.
Due to its numerous forests, woodlands and hills, the wildlife of Bangladesh is very diverse: you may meet here lots of the animal species beginning with the jungle cat, tigers and leopards and to the giant elephants, reptiles, snakes and crocodiles.
